May 2022 - From the Executive Director

In his poem The Wasteland, T.S. Eliot wrote, “April is the cruelest month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain.”  That was 1922. One-hundred years later his ideas resemble how we feel emerging from pandemic din.

At Telecare we have endured dead land and dull roots with the pandemic, but God has grown new desires with His own spring rain.

God enabling, we pivoted to online training to prepare new call responders. God providing, we found creative ways to reach the donor public to create partnerships and revenue. God encouraging, we heard the lilacs of callers’ voices amidst their pain. However, most of all, God stirring, we saw good people coming to Telecare to serve as volunteers when they could have kept to themselves.

With recognition of dozens of people who have served at Telecare, and to volunteers who currently serve faithfully on the lines, this newsletter is for you. Thank you for your faithful service amidst spring thaw.

Gary and Jane represent a growing mental health crisis in Canada—one marked by hidden loneliness across all ages. Nearly 30% of Canadians report frequent feelings of loneliness which is a major contributor to depression and emotional distress. While Gary isolates in silence and Jane hides her pain behind good grades, both could benefit from intentional peer support. Services like Telecare and chat-based mental health support offer a lifeline to those who struggle to speak their pain aloud. For many, text and phone support lines reduce distress, offering compassionate care and hope.

Youth in Canada are facing rising rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Plus, social media overuse, academic pressure, and isolation contribute to many mental health struggles. Yet, access to digital support is helping bridge the gap. Early success stories confirm that chat-based emotional care can be life-saving. As the mental health landscape shifts, tools like Telecare’s chat support are essential for reaching youth where they are—with compassion and care.

When my husband passed away three years ago, I lost more than a partner—I lost my sense of purpose. My name is Margaret, and I’m 72 years old. I spent nearly 50 years married to the love of my life, building a home, raising children, and sharing every part of my day with him. When he was gone, the house we filled with laughter and memories became unbearably quiet.

One night, lying awake in the early hours, I came across Telecare’s number while scrolling through mental health resources. Something about the phrase “compassionate listening” gave me the courage to call. My hands shook as I dialled, but I thought, What do I have to lose?

Life is filled with moments of difficulty, pain, and uncertainty. In such times, finding words to express our emotions or to pray can feel impossible. The Psalms, however, offer a lifeline.

Stress is a pervasive part of modern life, and finding effective ways to manage it is essential for maintaining overall health and well-being. One of the most common and accessible techniques for reducing stress is diaphragmatic breathing, also known as belly breathing or abdominal breathing. This simple yet powerful exercise can be practiced anywhere and provides immediate relief from stress.

Recently, my family faced a health crisis that quickly became known through social media and CaringBridge. The outpouring of support has been overwhelming. Just today, before I wrote this, two more people reached out to express their concern. It's heartwarming to see how many people are keeping us in their thoughts and prayers.
