Words to the Wise Helper

June 2025 | Newsletter

Life used to be easier.

I don’t know how to change the channels on my new TV.

I don’t want to pay my bills using my computer.

I want to see my doctor in person, not talk to him by phone.

That phone tells me it needs to be updated, so guess what. I do.

On and on it goes…

Everyday I’m confronted by new technology and I’m thinking you may be too.

I lament “Things have changed so much!”

But I know some things haven’t, and feelings are one of them.

Anger, fear, loneliness, sadness, stress, and the happy ones too - joy, peace, love.

I remember seeing my mom cry when she was diagnosed with a blood cancer, and years later when we all broke down when my strong, big brother collapsed with a terminal brain tumour. I could go on and recount many times when feelings were intense.  So can you.

Oftentimes when the feelings arose, God sent someone to care and to listen. Did God send people to you too?

Maybe He is calling you to share your gift of compassion for someone who is experiencing intense feelings.

Life does change, and some of these changes are a bother, but God still wants us to be a “faithful steward” of His grace, and your gift from God may be to listen to people who are hurting.

He may even ask you to use your phone.

Call that person you know is struggling and listen to his or her story or…

and this is a big one - learn how to text or message using your phone.

That young man in your church, the one you heard was having a hard time, experiencing social anxiety and too nervous to talk by phone, may respond to your kind words typed into one.  Try it.

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
