Telecare BC Offers Support to Struggling British Columbians During Mental Health Crisis

May is mental health month under the Canadian Mental Health Association, and Abbotsford’s Telecare Crisis & Caring Line continues to serve lower mainland citizens with supportive phone care amidst grave mental health conditions.

“Unique factors are contributing to the steady pattern in mental health disorders,” remarks Executive Director Bill Strom. “The pandemic echo, higher costs of living, and increased addictions add to the common predictors of low income, isolated living, and poor physical health.” About 17% of British Columbians experience poor mental health today, and over 50% will feel similarly before age 40.

In terms of suicide, the BC Coroner’s office reports that approximately 150 people in the Fraser Health Authority take their lives annually, 18 in Abbotsford alone. These figures don’t include suicide attempts—which are ten times the rate of occurrences—nor signal the rippling effect of loss and fallout among family and friends.

“We know that most of our calls are from people who are on a wave. They’re panicked or down and need help to think positive thoughts and make better choices to keep them afloat.” Strom comments.

Telecare is one call centre in the province that welcomes calls from individuals wrestling with faith in times of crisis. Belonging to a supportive faith community has been shown to build resilience, and Telecare is an extension of such communities.

Telecare BC is a free service where trained peer support workers listen empathetically, think through issues, and refer callers to local social agencies when appropriate.

In addition, Telecare BC provides educational resources at telecarebc.com/blog regarding mental health and how to support friends in need. People interested in volunteering may contact admin@telecarebc.com. Those interested in donating may visit telecarebc.com/donate.

He lived on his own in his newly-renovated apartment, and drove one of the nicest cars in his complex. Samuel shared that he kept fit and wondered at times if he was the envy of other elderly men—and women—around him.

One day Louisa told me that she felt like she was nobody’s priority, nobody’s first choice. It hit me that her biggest problem was not unemployment or even the loss she had experienced, but more the crushing belief that she did not matter.
