Jesus, Our Compassionate Servant Model

Two Grand Themes in Scripture

Throughout the Scriptures we see Jesus exhibiting at least two grand themes: his willingness to serve humankind by obedience to the Father, and his compassion for the people for whom he came to save.

It's About Serving Others

Jesus says in Mark 10:45, “Even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.” In the previous verse, He challenges His disciples that whoever wants to be great in His kingdom must be a slave of all. Jesus spoke these words right after James and John requested to sit on his right and his left hand in his glory. Jesus showed them that His kingdom is not about lordship, power, and authority but about serving others.

In Philippians 2:1-8, Paul calls on the people in the church to reflect on their relationships with one another and to embrace the humble self-giving attitude of Jesus Christ, their Lord, who even though He was equal with God the Father from eternity, willingly came to earth, became a servant, and was obedient to die on the cross. How true as the hymn says that “He could have called ten thousand angels to destroy the world and set Him free. He could have called ten thousand angels, but He died alone for you and me.

A Willing Servant

In Philippians 2:1-8, Paul calls on the people in the church to reflect on their relationships with one another, and to embrace the humble self-giving attitude of Jesus who though He was equal with God the Father from eternity, willingly came to earth, became a servant, and was obedient to die on the cross. How true as the hymn says that “He could have called ten thousand angels to destroy the world and set Him free. He could have called ten thousand angels, but He died alone for you and me.

A Calling to Take on The Character of Jesus

In Ephesians 4:1-3, Paul urges us to live a life worthy of the calling we have received—a calling to take on the character of Jesus in our relationships with one another, and from Matthew 11:29, we know he was humble and gentle in heart. Living with gentle humility brings rest to our souls, and helps us show Jesus’ compassion to people hurting around us. There is no hierarchy of service in Christ’s kingdom. We have different giftings and different responsibilities in Telecare but we all have the same responsibility to serve one another in compassionate love.

Telecare's Commissioning Service

In Telecare's commissioning service we ask new volunteers to affirm the following statement: “As followers of Jesus Christ and members of Telecare, we are instruments of God’s love; we listen to those who hurt and share our insights in the Spirit of Him who sends us.”

Demonstrating Compassion and Caring

The essence of our Telecare mission is to demonstrate the compassion of Jesus Christ to all who call. How encouraging it is when we can share God’s love and care to callers who doubt God’s care for them (see Hebrews 4:14-16)! Jesus Christ, our always-accessible high priest, cares for us in our times of weakness and temptation.

Searching for A Servant's Heart

Let’s be challenged by these words from evangelist Luis Palau. “God isn’t impressed in the least by job title, bank account or standing in the community. God is searching for a servant’s heart.” We thank God for giving us Jesus’ model of compassionate love with a servant heart.

Gary and Jane represent a growing mental health crisis in Canada—one marked by hidden loneliness across all ages. Nearly 30% of Canadians report frequent feelings of loneliness which is a major contributor to depression and emotional distress. While Gary isolates in silence and Jane hides her pain behind good grades, both could benefit from intentional peer support. Services like Telecare and chat-based mental health support offer a lifeline to those who struggle to speak their pain aloud. For many, text and phone support lines reduce distress, offering compassionate care and hope.

Youth in Canada are facing rising rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Plus, social media overuse, academic pressure, and isolation contribute to many mental health struggles. Yet, access to digital support is helping bridge the gap. Early success stories confirm that chat-based emotional care can be life-saving. As the mental health landscape shifts, tools like Telecare’s chat support are essential for reaching youth where they are—with compassion and care.

When my husband passed away three years ago, I lost more than a partner—I lost my sense of purpose. My name is Margaret, and I’m 72 years old. I spent nearly 50 years married to the love of my life, building a home, raising children, and sharing every part of my day with him. When he was gone, the house we filled with laughter and memories became unbearably quiet.

One night, lying awake in the early hours, I came across Telecare’s number while scrolling through mental health resources. Something about the phrase “compassionate listening” gave me the courage to call. My hands shook as I dialled, but I thought, What do I have to lose?

Stress is a pervasive part of modern life, and finding effective ways to manage it is essential for maintaining overall health and well-being. One of the most common and accessible techniques for reducing stress is diaphragmatic breathing, also known as belly breathing or abdominal breathing. This simple yet powerful exercise can be practiced anywhere and provides immediate relief from stress.

Recently, my family faced a health crisis that quickly became known through social media and CaringBridge. The outpouring of support has been overwhelming. Just today, before I wrote this, two more people reached out to express their concern. It's heartwarming to see how many people are keeping us in their thoughts and prayers.
